A story behind the photo
Jun. 24th, 2011 10:21 amA new video shows the “kissing couple” being knocked down by charging Vancouver riot police just minutes before the famous photograph was taken.
Scott Jones and Alex Thomas spin around and topple to the street as they’re caught in the path of officers with riot shields and clubs.
“We were struck by police shields, pushed to the ground and I was just very, very frightened,” Thomas told the Star the day after the riots June 15.
“Everything happened so fast, faster than we could ever imagine it could happen.”
Moments later, Jones would lean over and kiss Thomas, a split second captured by photographer Rich Lam that has become an iconic image of the riots.
“I was just trying to calm her down,” Jones said.
