Police say a RCMP vehicle was responding to a domestic incident on Saturday afternoon on Highway 102 in Nova Scotia with lights and sirens blazing when a man in a grey car raced up behind him.

The officer thought the driver might be distressed or needed police assistance so he slowed down and allowed the car to catch up.

"When he did, the driver simply smiled and saluted the officer and sped away," said Cpl. Scott MacRae, RCMP spokesman.

The police officer changed lanes and tried to stop the grey car and they reached speeds of over 150 km/h. The two cars slowed down and sped up several times until it was deemed unsafe and the officer was called off the chase. The grey car zoomed off.

But investigators managed to trace the car — it was a rental — and identified the driver.

Yesterday, RCMP in Pictou County caught sight of the suspect car and tried to pull it over. MacRae said there wasn’t a chase but the driver was reluctant to stop at first and allegedly resisted arrest.

Mikail Dorofeev, 33, of Toronto is facing a slew of charges including dangerous driving and flight from police.
