Но в какой-то момент она осознала, что не должна оставаться жертвой, что историческая фотография была щедрым даром, которым можно воспользоваться для пропаганды мира: "Я поняла, что свободна, что нахожусь в свободной стране и могу управлять этой фотографией".
И она учредила Фонд Ким Фук, который оказывает медицинскую и психологическую помощь жертвам войны.

Her family was supportive, but their house was destroyed, and once the North Vietnamese took over they were "left to fend for themselves," with precious few resources and no assistance.
Kim was permitted to enroll in medical school, but for various reasons she was never able to attain a medical degree - she was subjected so often to interviews with visiting journalists that she felt "as if she were leading a dual life, as student and as war victim."
Kim grew even more restive as she was exploited more systematically, and she longed to escape. In the early 1990s, she was sent to study at the University of Havana. "No more, she told her self, with enormous relief. I do not have to suffer any more."
Escape was not easily accomplished. Kim was constantly shadowed by one or more "minders" from North Vietnam, and only by a clever, daring subterfuge was she able at last to seek asylum in Canada, in the fall of 1992. By then she was married to a fellow Vietnamese whom she had met in Cuba.
Now they live in Toronto with their two sons; her husband works at two unglamorous jobs, and Kim, in addition to her duties as a mother and wife, travels around the world to speak on behalf of UNESCO. She has not exploited her modest fame for personal gain, but she seems to regard herself as a spokesperson for the innocent victims of war.
